McCRARY-WRIGHT CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 26-2-1E. SW SE NE. Located in a grove of old trees. Approximately 1/2 mile due east of Riverton Road and one mile due north of the Three Forks of Flint River. BOLDEN - Anthony Bolden - Born in 1807 - Died Dec. 20, 1892 ] These upright marble markers were ] located outside the stone wall that BOLDEN - Eliza Bolden - Born in 1827 - Died Dec. 23, 1892. ] enclosed the rest of the cemetery. Note: The following graves were inside a very high stone wall. The wall itself was unique because its height was greater than most cemetery enclosures. One marvels at the weight of each stone block and the labor taken to set them in place. The ends of each stone were carved to fit the contour of the next one to it and the result was not only functional but made the wall a thing of beauty and endurance. A huge limb from an old tree had fallen across the wall, probably the result of a severe windstorm, and torn many of the stone blocks to the ground. The limb was later removed and the wall restored. McCRARY - To the Memory of Thomas McCrary, Born Jan. 17, 1789, Departed this life August 31, 1865. Note: This marble headstone was in the form of a scroll. Thomas McCrary was born in Charleston, S. C. and married Betsy Wright Sept. 23, 1812. McCRARY - Betsey McCrary was born 12th April, 1793, Departed this life 10th May, 1821. Census, Nov. 16, 1850 McCrary, Thomas 59 S. C. Nancy 45 N. C. Williams 21 Ala. Wright, Cyntha 33 " Harriet 24 " , farmer - $15,000. ) Nancy Wright, a cousin to Betsy, ) was Thomas' second wife. Also see McCrary Cem. on Page 231 WRIGHT - Sacred to the Memory of Major Daniel Wright, The Patriot of '76, The Kind Husband, Father & Philanthropis[t], Born Sept. 27th A. D., 1759, Departed this Life May 24th 1838. WRIGHT - In Memory of Adeline Eugene Wright who was Born April 13th 1822, Departed this Life September 8th 1835. Note: The Wrights and McCrarys were two of Madison County's earliest pioneer families and owned adjoining plantations; their family histories are closely interwoven. ---- "M. Y. W. " Note: This appeared to be a footstone with these initials carved thereon. We could not locate a matching headstone but it is quite possible that it is buried under many years' accumulation of leaves. It possibly marked the grave of a Wright or a Wyche. WYCHE - Henry C. Wyche - Born August 26, 1826 - Departed this life April 19, 1853. [Note: This is Henry Chambers Wyche who is a brother to Lucinda Wyche] WYCHE - Lucinda Wyche - Born Jan'y. 30, 1803 - Died June 11, 1850. Note: Mrs. Glen D. Estes (Nee Mary Wyche) and I visited this cemetery in July, 1969. Lucinda Wyche was her great-great-grandmother and we were delighted to find the stones legible after so many years of weathering. The two Wyche graves were box tombs but even though the lids had fallen from place we were able to maneuver them 'so they could be read easily. SANDIDGE - My Daughter, the first pledge of youthful affection, Kathleen I. Sandidge, Born Dec. 18th 1835, Obit July 15th 1837. By the Mother. Note: James S. Sandidge married Elizabeth O. Wyche April 6, 1835 (MB-4). The above Kathleen is probably their daughter. 230 - (834)
