STONE-FANNING CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 24-2-1E - N/2 N/2 NW Note: This cemetery is located atop a small hill and is surrounded by a wood rail fence. In the first row are two graves: one is marked with a small wooden marker of which the lettering has faded and is no longer readable. The other grave is unmarked. STONE - In Memory of Jesse Stone - Born March 6th 1787 - Died August 27th 1862 STONE - In Memory of Winney Stone - Born Sept. 11th 1796 - Died October 17th 1862 Census, Nov. 11, 1850 Stone, Jesse 59 S. C. Farmer - $3900. Winney 52 Ga. Wm. 23 Ala. Salina 18 " Winney 15 " Lucinda 13 " -m- David C. Strong 6-13-1855 (MB-4B) STONE - W. M. Stone - Born Oct. 1, 1827; was married to J. C. Fanning; Died September 20, 1885, Aged 57 years, 11 mo. & 19 days. (D. M. Kitchens & Bros., Winchester, Tenn.) Note: William M. Stone -m- Julia C. Fanning Nov. 30, 1865 (MB-5). D. M. Kitchens was the stonecutter who furnished the stone. ---- At the beginning of this row is a slate marker that has weathered and crumbled away. It is very old but I have no way of knowing who is buried here. PETTY - In Memory of Susan A. Petty who was born May 25th 1816 - Departed this life January the 9th 1859. Note: Susan Ann Stone -m- Daniel H. Petty Nov. 5, 1833 (MB-4) Weathered slate marker. ---- Unlettered fieldstone. FANNING - In Memory of Rachel Alice, daughter of Sarah & Middleton Fanning, Born June 8th, 1857 - Died April ..., 1862, Aged... Yrs., ... Mo., & 6 days. [Note: part of stone chipped away]. STONE - In Memory of Jesse M. Stone - Born August 24th 1866 - Died August 17th 1867. Son of W. M. & J. C. Stone. STONE - Winnie L., daughter of William M. & J. C. Stone. Born December 19, 1872 - Died November 21, 1878. FANNING - Sarah, wife of Middleton Fanning, born in Virginia, came to Alabama in 1836, married in her 19th year, Died April 13, 1880 in the 63rd year of her age. Dearest sister thou hast left .... Here thy loss we deeply feel; Yet tis God that hath... He can all our sorrows [heal]. (Note: part of this stone is illegible.] FANNING - Middleton Fanning - Born September 5, 1812 - Died April 27, 1895. (See census on next page] ---- Unmarked grave here. FANNING - In Memory of Mrs. Francis M. Fanning, Born August the 28th 1847 - Died June the 11th 1867. Wife of John Fanning. FANNING - James Fanning - Born August 8, 1816 - Died July 13, 1888. ---- Slate marker, weathered. Note: Part of the beautiful fence that once surrounded the cemetery is gone. There is evidence that a house stood at the edge of this burial ground. Several "sinks" indicate graves, unmarked, in the same cemetery but somewhat set apart from the rest of the graves. 233 - (837)
