[Note: a Negro servant] PETTEY CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 14-2-1E. W/2 SW SW NW This two-grave cemetery is located one mile south of Bloucher Ford Negro cemetery on the east side of the road, and approximately 1/2 mile north of the McCrary-Wright Cemetery. The graves are located on the bank of the road and the bank has been reinforced with cement and rocks to keep it from washing away around the graves. William Pettey patented the NW/4 of Section 14 (this land) in 1815. PETTEY - In Memory of William Pettey - Born March 13, 1764 - Died September 26, 1834. PETTEY - In Memory of Lucy Pettey - Born July 7, 1765 - Died August 16, 1842. BELL CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 15-2-1E - SE SW NE NE This cemetery is located in a field off Macon Lane. BELL - In memory of Sarah Bell - Consort of James Bell - born 1777 - died Aug. 3, 1815. Note: This death date could be 1845 instead of 1815 even though I studied it carefully when I copied it. If it is 1815, and I believe it is, then it is the oldest tombstone in Madison County still standing. It is a box tomb and is just outside the door of a very old house that has now fallen in. SPAIN CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 14-2-1E - SE SE NW - Approximately 1/3 of a mile due east of Macon Lane. This may have been the burial site of Augustus Spain (1801-1852) and Mrs. William F. Whitman (Nee Augustus Spain) (1811-1876), and many others whose identity I do not know. This cemetery is no longer in existence having been plowed over and planted in cotton. An elderly Negro lady took me to the cemetery site and told me that when she was young there were many tombstones in the cemetery but that sometime between the 1930's and the 1950's the stones were carried away and dumped somewhere. She had no idea where they were. Census, Nov. 9, 1850 Spain, Augustin 48 N. C., Farmer D. J. (f) 38 Ala.
