On the property of the Helton Ranch (Jerry Helton, owner) is a large cemetery with no markers. The cemetery is on Walker Lane and covers approximately one acre. It is terribly overgrown and has many, many "sinks." Mr. Helton said he had no idea who was buried there or even whether the cemetery was Negro or white. Mr. Helton speculated that it might be the slave graveyard of the Walker family. A little over a quarter of a mile south of the driveway leading to the Townsend Cemetery, above, is a historical marker which reads: "Near here lived John Williams Walker (1783-1823) President of Alabama's First Constitutional Convention, 1819, and Alabama's First U. S. Senator, 1819-22. Walker County in Northwest Alabama, created 1823, was named in his honor. Four of his sons, Percy Walker, John James Walker, LeRoy Pope Walker, and Richard Wilde Walker were prominent in Alabama politics." Mr. Helton's land and the cemetery plot was at one time owned by the Walkers and Walker Lane was named after them. HUNT CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 22-2-1E - C. E/2 NE SE. On Macon Lane HUNT - W. A.
