In the 1930's Virgil Carrington ("Pat") Jones wrote some articles for The Huntsville Times on various interesting homes throughout the county. One of the homes he wrote about was the Gross Scruggs home. In the article he mentions the family cemetery: "Upon parting the growth at the edge [of a clump of Sassafras bushes] one looks in over a decayed brick wall upon the final resting place of many of the Scruggses. Thick undergrowth has marred all traces of graves. Stone slabs, devoid of inscription, lie piled together and alone among the leaves. Rabbits and other small animals seek the copse [of trees] as a spot unfrequented by humanity. " Gross Scruggs was born in Bedford County, Va., Jan. 5, 1772. He first married Nancy Logwood May 31, 1792 and had seven children: Thomas, William, Gross Jr., Edmund L., Ann H., Mary F., and Martha (Patsy). His wife died April 2, 1805. He married second to Mary Tate in Bedford Co. on Oct. 17, 1805 and moved to Rutherford Co., Tenn. On July 29, 1812 he bought the NE/4 and SE/4 of Sec. 15-3-1E in Madison Co., Ala. On June 2, 1817 he bought the west half of the section thereby owning all of Section 15. By his second wife, Mary Tate, he had 12 children: Elizabeth, Emily, Sarah, William, Julia, Pamelia, Sophia, John Waddy, James Henry, Margaret, Frances, Harriett, and Eloise which brought his total to 19 children. Mary Tate Scruggs (his 2nd wife) died on Sept. 19, 1832 at Sulphur Springs, Va. at the age of 49. Scruggs then married Mary Saunders, widow of William Jones; after her death he married Edith, widow of Reuben Shotwell. No children were born to these last two marriages. Gross Scruggs died in 1856 at the age of 95 years. [Note: Family information given here is from the article by "Pat" Jones written for The Huntsville Times.] Note: I have looked repeatedly for the cemetery described above but was unable to locate it. 247 - (851)
