RYLAND CEMETERY
LOCATION: In Ryland, Alabama.
On February 3, 1809 Richard Crowson obtained 160 acres in the NW/4 of Section 24-3-1E. On Oct. 3, 1815 Richard and his wife Sarah sold the land to Nathan Green. On Dec. 6, 1820 Nathaniel Green, Senr. and his wife Janet (also called Jenny) sold, for $50., 1/2 acre of this land to David Thompson, John W. Hewlett, Thomas King, Augustin Hewlett, and Joel Tatum, trustees of the Shilo Methodist Episcopal Church. This is the land on which the old section of the cemetery stands today (on south side of road). The church now stands across the street in the SE corner of the SW/4 of Section 13-3-1E. The original church must have stood where there are now graves in Section 24-31-1. The old graveyard has been greatly enlarged from the original 1/2 acre. On April 3, 1974 a tornado swept across North Alabama wreaking havoc in its path. It destroyed a great portion of the town of Ryland. Though it caused relatively little damage to the cemetery it did appear to break off several tombstones and uprooted some huge trees which did cause some damage to tombstones, particularly in the southwest corner of the old part of the cemetery.
Across the fence south of the old section of the cemetery are a number of Negro graves. They are not copied in this survey and are separated from the white graveyard by an old wire fence.
