Billy Walker, Cecil Fain, and Martha Green surrounded by trophies
Billy Walker, Cecil Fain, and Martha Green surrounded by trophies

If it's really true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then it's not necessary to say very much about this picture, except to say that these trophies do not represent all the awards that were won by the kids at Rison School. Some awards were in certificate form and are not available to display.

What do you think that Mr. Fain would say about this picture? Perhaps he would say, "Just look - when I came to Rison we had only one trophy and now we have so many. These and other accomplishments reflect the skill and determination of my students. The students at Rison represented the children that I never had, and I'm very proud of each and every one of them."

Here is a short video where Mr. Fain discusses school spirit at Rison.

The kids at Rison were very competitive and were motivated to play hard at whatever sport that interested them. While they were self-motivated, much of the motivation also came from a number of people: Cecil Fain, Hub Myhand, O.E. Richardson, Luke Tucker, "Booger" Knight, Slow Owens, Bill Rice, Beanie Falkenberry, Aubrey Turner, and volunteer Carl Walker to name a few. If you remember others, we'll be glad to add them to the list.

Below you will find pictures of some of the sports teams and cheerleader squads and some sports-related artifacts from Rison's history. The photographs are arranged chronologically. If you know any of the missing names, please contact the Rison-Dallas Association using the email link at the bottom of this page.

1932 Pilot
Rison had a very active sports program that included:

  • Girls and boys basketball. Girls only played basketball during the school's earlier years; the sport was later banned because it was considered to be too dangerous.
  • Boys baseball during the school year; some boys also played on an American Legion team during the summer.
  • Girls softball during the school year; some of the girls played on a Huntsville City league in the summer.
  • Boys football

In addition to many awards for sports activities, Rison School also excelled in various fields of interscholastic competition such as public speaking, drama, essay contests, spelling contests, debating contests, and oratorical contests.

    And now, the photographs!

The Dallas Bumble Bees have just completed a most successful season not only coming through the City League series without a defeat but winning a majority of their out of town games. The Dallas schedule this year was not an easy one in any respect and besides playing the University of Alabama’s crack varsity team and the Birmingham Athletic Club Five they played many strong College and Prep teams of Alabama and Tennessee and in the most of these came through with a victory. Due to the fact that the Bumble Bees have not lost a game in the City league for the past three years they were awarded a handsome trophy. The Dallas Team has a majority of 91 points over their opponents for the year, they having 564 points and their contestants 473, the Bumble Bees coming thru with a record of 13 victories out of 20 games played. This record for the Bumble Bees is one of the most remarkable histories that have ever been made by a cage team in this part of Alabama and their work this season has brought them wide praise.
