I enlisted in the U.S. Army Security Agency in 4 Feb 1957. Basic training at Fort Chaffee, AR. Trained as a Cryptanalyst at Fort Devens, MA. Worked as a Cryptanalyst and Electronic Warfare/Signals Intelligence analyst in Frankfurt, Heilbronn, and Rothwesten, Germany, before leaving the army as a young Sergeant in 1960 - 'still too young to drink legally.
I returned to Huntsville where I met my wife (who happened to be from PA - a soldier's daughter at Redstone), before re-enlisting in the ASA. Following this re-enlistment I served as an analyst, intelligence operations supervisor, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major and Command Sergeant Major in assignments in Okinawa, Korea and many places in Germany to include Berlin. My assignments in the states included the USASA Training Center and School at Fort Devens, MA, The USAF School of Applied Cryptologic Sciences at Goodfellow AFB, TX, and at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, MD.
Following my military career I spent a couple of years working with Nuclear Security at Brown's Ferry before accepting the position of Operations Officer with the Army Forces Command Technical Analysis and Control Element in Atlanta, GA., a position I held until I became the Chief, Cryptologic Support Group, Forces Command for the National Security Agency. I retired from this post in February 2000.
