•  "Catherine Kelly Gilliam is a native of Madison County. She was born in Huntsville, but grew up in Jeff, Alabama. One of her earliest memories is of helping her great uncle Lawson Kelly, who furnished all the flowers, make arrangements for Confederate Memorial Day services in Maple Hill Cemetery. Catherine's interest in preservation and HHF came from her participation in the Civil War committee, 1960-1965. She says that she was 'just born doing it.' For her services to the community, HHF nominated her for a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Alabama Girl Scouts Women's Scroll of Honor, which she won in 1996." - HHQ, 1998

She appears in acknowledgments for several books and articles. In a Review article about Watercress, Christopher Lang says: "Much appreciation to the late Catherine Kelley Gilliam for her vivid recollections of watercress cultivation on her family's farm in Jeff, Alabama." - Editor's Note

•  "The local society erected its first Alabama Historical Association marker in 1953, and since that time, has been the driving force in ensuring that Madison County residents and visitors alike are made aware of the many interesting and historically significant sites in the area. •  "Alabama Day ," December 14, 1969, the 150th anniversary of the day Alabama entered the Union was a day of celebration in Huntsville. Mrs. Gilliam served on the program committee and she hand made a Twenty-Two Star Flag, including the star for Alabama, featured in the ceremony. - Russell

•  "She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard Holland Gilliam Jr.; sons, Richard Holland Gilliam III of Ann Arbor, Mich., and David Allen Gilliam and wife, Tanya Barney Gilliam, of Huntsville; daughter, Karen Gilliam Andress and husband, Randal Paul Andress, of Huntsville; and grandchildren, John Richard Andress and Kelly Carpenter Andress. Visitation will be held graveside at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Maple Hill Cemetery with services to be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Coy J. Hallmark officiating. Laughlin Service Funeral Home will be directing. Pallbearers will be Andy Cobb, Jeff Cobb, Allen Gilliam, Mark Gilliam, David Hay, Josh Kelly III, Matt Kelly and Tom Kelly III." - Find A Grave
