• "BANKHEAD, Tallulah Brockman (Jan. 31, 1903-Dec. 12, 1968) One of the most famous actresses of her day. She was born in Huntsville, one of two daughters of William Brockman Bankhead. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and the children were reared by relatives in Montgomery and Jasper. She received her education in a number of institutions in Washington and New York City. While a child she was subject to bronchial ailments which deepened her voice, giving it its unique quality and helping her to become one of the foremost actresses of the world during her lifetime. She decided she wanted to be an actress, and her father, who had been dissuaded from an acting career by his parents, permitted her to journey to New York City to try for a career in the theatre. She has been celebrated as an actress since the 1920s. In 1939 she possibly reached the height of her Broadway career with her role in The Little Foxes. In 1944 she received the New York Film Critics award for her role in the motion picture Lifeboat. In 1952 she published her life story in Tallulah, a frank and witty biography of her life on and off the stage and screen. It became a bestseller. She died in New York of double pneumonia and emphysema." - Alabama Past Leaders
