Jones had moved to Lauderdale County (Florence), Alabama, as a physician and with Maria's power of attorney when the deed was executed in 1867. More noticeably, Maria was living in Havana, Cuba, when the transaction occurred. It may be that the family had holdings in Cuba for many years, since none of them were found in the 1830, 1840, or 1850 census records of the United States. However, there was a Jones family living very near Archibald McDonnell (who lived on land adjacent to the Jones 37-5 Cemetery), Abraham Beadle, and the nearby Matkin families in the 1850 census of Madison County. This family of Fred Jones included a son named 9 - (1865)
