James Clemens may have had an influence upon young Samuel H. Moore, as will be discussed later in this report. James Clemens freed his slaves during the 1850s, well before the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. The slave census for Martha's holdings also shows a “Cooperative of Huntsville” that owned 7 slaves - possibly for maintenance duties around the town. 29 - (1960)
