DOCTOR WILLIAM SIMPSON
Theophilus Lacy was the son of Heniy and Angelica Lacy. He was bom Novem-ber 4. 1736, at New Kent County, Virginia, and died about May 1777. The inventory of the estate of Theophilus Lacy was filed November 24, 1777, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Stephen Cocke became guardian of Batte Cocke Lacy, Betsey Lacy, Hopkins Lacy, Theophilus Lacy, John Lacy, Polly Lacy, and William Lacy, orphans of TTieo-philus Lacy, deceased. Theophilus Lacy married Martha Cocke, November 28, 1759, in Amelia County, Virginia.21 She was the daughter of Abraham and Mary Batte Cocke. Martha (Cocke) Lacy's paternal grandfather Stephen Cocke, was a first cousin, of Elizabeth (Cocke) Cary, 12th G.G. Grandmother of the author. Theophilus Lacy and Martha Cocke were the parents of al least seven children.24
1. Batte Cocke Lacy married Elizabeth Overton.
2. Betsey Lacy.
3. Hopkins Lacy married Marguerite Simpson, widow of Dr. William Simpson, q.v., of whom further.
4. Theophilus Lacy, died unmarried.
5. John Lacy was bora in Virginia, and died August I3j 1826, at Lacy's Spring, Alabama. He was twice married, but the name of his first wife is not of record. John married secondly, Mary Henderson, daughter of Thomas and * I. 2 3 4 5 * * * * * * * * *
Jane (Marlin) Henderson. She was also a sister of Governor Alexander Martin of North Carolina. Mary was bora January 16, 1795. at Rockingham. North Carolina, and died July 4, 185O.B John had issue by both marriages, by his first wife he had:
I. Hopkins Lacy, II, was bom January 1797. He married Susan Axton, February 14, 1832. They were the parent of at least five children:36
1. Martha Lacy was bora 1834. She married William M. Cruse, March 26, 1851.
2. Mary Elizabeth Lacy was bom 1836. She married William E. Wright, November 29, 1851. (Admr. of James Dickson's Estate. James was the father-in-law of John Simpson, q.v.)
3. Elizabeth M. Lacy married William McLeod, son of Mary Simpson, q.v.
4. Hopkins Lacy, Jr., was bora 1842.
5. Harriet Lacy was bom 1843.
