Woodward Cemetery, 88-2 Summary Report, page 7

The 1850 census of Madison County also shows a Woodward family in the area. The family was headed by John S. Woodward, shown with wife Susanah (Susan) and children that included those shown later in the 1860 census - at least, those who were born by the time of the 1850 enumeration. The neighbors of the Woodward family in 1850 included Joel Joiner (from whom the many Joiner black families probably took their surnames after emancipation) and doctor Preston Caphaw (which is confirmed by the next census page to be “Capshaw”, from which name was derived the Capshaw community and road, northwest of the town of Madison). John S. Woodward married Susan Bell in June of 1840, per the marriage records of the county. That is a pretty good indication that he had left the state of his birth (Tennessee, per the 1850 census record) and moved into Madison County of Alabama by 1840. Further proof that John Woodward was living in Alabama before 1840 is offered by the age and birthplace of the oldest child shown in the household in 1850. Francis L. Woodward was shown as 7 - (2923)
