The original ownership of the Southwest Quarter of Section 20 in T5-R1W is shown on the Government Tract Book page inserted below. It reveals that James Finch, as an “assignee” of someone else, purchased the parcel of land on March 16, 1818, under Certificate Number 2988. It is not clear how Henry Finch came to possess the right to sell it to Hughy Smith in 1835.
