While John Timmons provided well for his family, relatives, and community within the culture of his times, he was in fact a slave owner of the Old South. The slave count on the Timmons plantation was shown in the 1840 census (on the right hand page extension), inserted below. The page is marked with red lines to show the slaves of both Hughy Smith and John Timmons. Both men were among those with the larger plantations and slave counts in the county. 72 - (3021)
