patented to J. Scarbrough in 1830. At about the same time, Hugh(y) Smith took the East Half of the section. However, Mr. Scarbrough apparently defaulted on payment for the West Half, because in 1834 it was recorded that John Simmons got that land as an “assignee” of another person (Scarbrough). Note also that John Timmons got the land in all other quarters of Section 22. Normally, the subsequent exchanges of ownership of land are shown in the INDEX TO LANDS, as shown below. However, in this case, there is no record for a John Simmons ever selling any land in the area. In fact, it is almost certain that the name was not John Simmons, but rather John Timmons. The old script of the original documents could easily have led to the difference in the names, as the handwritten “S” was nearly identical with “T” and “L”, just as the old “I” and “J” were indistinguishable for the most part in early documents. 7 - (3122)
