During their stay in Huntsville, the 69th Regiment of the New York Regiment made friends with local residents, including “Uncle Matt.” When the regiment marched in a victory parade in New York City following the peace treaty with Spain on December 10, 1898, they took “Uncle Matt” to New York to march with them. Uncle Matt from Huntsville was taken by Company A of the 69th Regiment of Infantry to march in the Victory Parade in New York City following the Dec. 10, 1898 peace treaty with Spain.
