Milton H. Lanier was a white lawyer who not only purchased the above parcel of land from Powhaton Toney, but he also witnessed several of the Toney land transactions. It is likely that he was considered the “family lawyer” by the Toneys. Milton H. Lanier is shown below in the 1920 census for reference, one year after the above transaction was conducted.
